From our humble beginnings during the early years of Detroit’s manufacturing boom, to the growth and success that continues through today, our hard work and unparalleled service have always been the driving force behind everything we do.
1930s – 1960s: Crafting Our Legacy
When All-Bright Mirror Works was founded in the 1930s in Detroit, all of our work was done by hand. With a production team consisting of a single glasscutter and two upright belt sanders, it was their hard work and old school craftsmanship that would define the company’s reputation for decades to come.
Early successes were driven by early innovations in silvering techniques, leading to the creation of our first in-house brand Antiqua, positioning Glass & Mirror Craft as the only company in the Metro Detroit area offering custom-made tinted mirrors.
In time, our founder passed the torch to a new generation, but our reputation for quality and craftsmanship remained firmly in place when Glass & Mirror Craft was formed in 1964, reinventing the business for a new era.
1970s – 1980s: Earning Our Reputation
While All-Bright Mirror Works remained the glazing arm of the business, Glass + Mirror Craft expanded our product line and capabilities to include glass fabrication with new straight line polishing and beveling machines.
Increased capabilities opened the door to national clientele. Our early work with custom clock manufacturer Howard Miller led to new opportunities creating custom home accessories with J.L. Hudson. This in turn inspired the creation of a new retail brand called Clocks by Mr. Mirror featured in J.C. Penney stores throughout the country.
With a national — and soon to be international — reputation on the rise, Glass + Mirror Craft once again made an evolutionary leap into the world of decorative glass by offering sophisticated custom etching capabilities.
Moving to larger facilities in Commerce Township to accommodate an ever-expanding customer base, our growing reputation was outpaced only by the demand for our services. Retail customers transitioned to a wholesale clientele with a national base of glaziers, glass shops, interior designers, and OEM accounts.
And there was even more growth, and change, on the horizon.
1990s: Evolving Our Capabilities
Glass + Mirror Craft began the decade with new equipment and upgrades, including the purchase of the company’s first tempering oven — opening up a line of fully-finished safety products and glass entry door systems.
The decorative glass division utilized these new in-house tempering capabilities to offer screen-printing with color match capabilities and custom patterns on all glass types.
Customers came to the company with a need for design services, and — armed with new engineering systems and a hardware division — Glass + Mirror Craft became a one-stop shop providing complete engineered glass and metal systems. G+MC offered customers support from quoting through installation with professionally produced, highly-detailed specification drawings, stamped engineering plans, and component assembly services.
These new products, capabilities, and services elevated Glass + Mirror Craft far above the competition to become the most complete glass fabricator in the Midwest.
2000s: Expanding Our Reach
The century turns; a new millennium begins with more customers relying on the quality and innovation that put Glass + Mirror Craft on the map. Increased demand required increased capacity, necessitating another move to even larger facilities.
Settling in to our new 80,000 sq. ft. facility in Wixom, the company introduced new lamination capabilities to further augment the engineered safety and decorative products — which led to our first laminated glass project, providing flooring for Haworth’s space in the Chicago Merchandise Mart.
To support the expansion and continue to meet the high demands of our customers, Glass + Mirror Craft’s logistics expanded its fleet to include multiple custom glass trucks, a box truck and a flatbed truck.
In 2005, a new generation took ownership, introducing Barracuda Manufacturing as our capabilities expanded to include insulated glass products for the commercial and residential markets.
In order to support increased demand from customers in Philadelphia and along the East Coast, Glass & Mirror Craft opened sales and distribution center in New Jersey in 2007 called Clear Choice Glass.
2010 – 2020: Sharing Our Future
Success comes to Glass + Mirror Craft the way it always has: Through hard work fueled by a commitment to quality and innovation.
Investing in people, processes, and new equipment, including a new laser quality scanner, a second tempering line, upgraded straight-line edge machines, and two new CNC machines, Glass + Mirror Craft continues to evolve
Change comes from within as well, through a culture of collaboration and accountability. In 2015, the leadership of the company assembled a group of employees from every level of the organization to craft the Glass + Mirror Craft Vision and Mission to focus our resources for the next decade.
A legacy of innovation, a reputation for quality, a business built on growth, and a shared vision for the future… The story of Glass + Mirror Craft is one of evolution.
From a simple 50 square foot shop in Metro Detroit in the 1930s, to the business that today employs over 140 people working together to support a select clientele of architects and designers throughout the country, we still hold our core values close.
Hard work and old school craftsmanship, sparked by an innovative spirit… Welcome to Glass + Mirror Craft.
In 2010, a separate company focused on steel metal fabrication was formed. Cuda Architectural Metals brought custom metal fabrication in-house, marking the evolution of Glass + Mirror Craft as a provider of complete engineered architectural glass and metal systems.
